What Should I Talk About in an Interview?<\/strong><\/h1>\n

For many candidates, the stress of being wanted by an employer is exhausting.\u00a0 We tweak our resumes, scour the internet for every opening that we might remotely qualify for, and network ourselves silly in the hopes of finding an \u201cin\u201d to our dream job.\u00a0 And then it happens\u2026 we get that break.\u00a0 Now what?<\/p>\n

The interview can present a challenge in and of itself.\u00a0 Anxiety may set in for some of you and with that the overflow of the mouth.\u00a0 \u00a0You simply have the hardest time stopping yourself from answering each question with five points, taking twenty minutes in length. \u00a0\u00a0For others, your brevity can give the impression of disinterest or a lack of communicative ability.\u00a0 What a nightmare to allow yourself to get that door open only to have your interview slam it shut.<\/p>\n

Avoiding these situations starts with perspective. \u00a0\u00a0Rationally think through why and how you qualify for this role.\u00a0 Develop a plan of presentation around specific points. \u00a0\u00a0How will you be sure to bring up what connects you to the role while answering the questions being asked?\u00a0 Consider this:<\/p>\n

Interviewer: \u201cMr. Smith, did you have any trouble finding our offices?\u201d<\/p>\n

You: \u201cWhy, no, I didn\u2019t. \u00a0\u00a0And I think that shows my ability to problem solve.\u00a0 Knowing a couple of days in advance that this interview was happening gave me a chance to take a dry run.\u00a0 That\u2019s what I do.\u00a0 I plan and prepare.\u00a0 And in this job, if I am selected, I know that I will bring that same passion to everything I do.\u201d<\/p>\n

Interviewer: (awkward silence)<\/p>\n

That may not be the best approach, even though the information has validity.\u00a0 Answer the questions being asked and give examples when appropriate.\u00a0 Share behavioral and\/or situational thoughts in response to the interviewer\u2019s questions, but you don\u2019t have to do that for the simpler questions like \u201cHow are you doing today?\u201d<\/p>\n

Work with a friend to prepare for the interview.\u00a0 Prepare some answers without it being staged so that when a likely question is asked, you can be confident in your response and avoid the \u201cum\u2019s\u201d and \u201clike\u2019s\u201d that plague so many unprepared interviewees.\u00a0 You\u2019ll shine like a star in comparison!<\/p>\n

Be okay about a conversation between career and job.\u00a0 Is this a career position?\u00a0 Are you giving the impression that you just want the job or that you can see a career path at the company?\u00a0 Think through short-term and long-term objectives.\u00a0 How does your education align with this path?\u00a0 Are you willing to have your job enlarged or enriched?<\/p>\n

If you ask a few questions, which you should, be sure to listen to the responses thoughtfully.\u00a0 Give good eye contact, nodding gestures, and repeat answers to show attention.\u00a0 Might sound basic to you, but can easily be lost due to nerves or lack of plan.\u00a0 Listening is\u00a0key<\/em>\u00a0to a great interview.<\/p>\n

And finally, smile.\u00a0 Enjoy this process.\u00a0 As daunting, annoying, or frustrating as it might seem to you, it\u2019s the first impression that this interviewer has of you.\u00a0 Relax and smile.\u00a0 You\u2019re demonstration of ease will confirm your planning.\u00a0 This interview is the way to show your potential employer who you are through a variety of communicative elements \u2013 speech, body language, gestures, eye contact, etc.\u00a0 Use them all well in the context of ease and enjoyment.\u00a0 They\u00a0want\u00a0to meet with you.\u00a0 Embrace that truth!<\/p>\n
